Bug #: 1212 (SQL Hotfix)
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.
SUMMARY
This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
- The issues that are fixed by the hotfix package
- The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package
- Whether you must restart the computer after you install the hotfix package
- Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
- Whether you must make any registry changes
- The files that are contained in the hotfix package
SYMPTOMS
When you restore a database in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the restore operation may take a long time to finish. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
- You create a replication on the database.
- The database contains many subscriptions for the articles in a publication.
- You restore the database by using the WITHOUT REPLICATION option. The WITHOUT REPLICATION option is the default restore option.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because SQL Server calls the sp_MSrepl_dropsubscription stored procedure for each subscription for each article.
When you restore a database, SQL Server uses the sp_MSrepl_dropsubscription stored procedure to delete the replication and to delete all the subscriptions. When SQL Server calls the sp_MSrepl_dropsubscription stored procedure, SQL Server deletes each subscription for each article in the syssubscriptions table. Therefore, the restore operation may take a long time if the database contains many subscriptions.
For example, assume that each call to the sp_MSrepl_dropsubscription stored procedure takes 1 second. If the database contains 9,000 subscriptions, the restore operation takes about 2.5 hours to finish.
