SYMPTOMS

After you configure a Personal Folders file (.pst) in Microsoft Outlook 2000, you may be prompted to enter your password even if you do not access the Personal Folders file.

You experience this issue if you do not save the password for the Personal Folders file in your password list.

Note When you use a Personal Folders file in Outlook 2000, you can configure one of the following password options:

  • You can save the password for the Personal Folders file in your password list. To do this, click to select the Save this password in your password list check box in the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box in Outlook. In this situation, you are not prompted for your password when you access the Personal Folders file.
  • You can decide not to save the password for the Personal Folders file in your password list. In this situation, you are prompted for the password when you access the Personal Folders file.


CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • A rule that contains a reference to the Personal Folders file is configured in Outlook.
  • The Personal Folders file is configured as the default location to where new messages are delivered.
  • The Personal Folders file contains an item that is triggered. For example, the Personal Folders file contains a Calendar item that contains a reminder.
  • The Net Folders add-in is enabled in Outlook.


RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps.

Disable rules in Outlook

Disable all the rules in Outlook to determine whether an Outlook rule causes Outlook to access the Personal Folders file. To disable a rule in Outlook, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook, and then click Rules Wizard on the Tools menu.
  2. Click to clear the check box for each rule that is displayed in the Rules Wizard dialog box.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Restart Outlook.

Determine whether the Personal Folders file is the default delivery location in Outlook

Determine whether new messages are sent to the particular Personal Folders file with which you experience this issue. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook, and then click Services on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Services dialog box, click the Delivery tab.
  3. Note the location that appears in the Deliver new mail to the following location list.

If the Personal Folders file with which you experience the issue appears in this list, you can change the default delivery location for new messages. To do this, click the appropriate location in the Deliver new mail to the following location list, and then click OK. Then, restart Outlook.

Determine whether an Outlook item is triggered

Examine the programs in Outlook to determine whether an item, such as a reminder, is triggered. To do this, examine the tasks items and the calendar items in Outlook.

Determine whether the Net Folders add-in is enabled

If the Net Folders add-in is enabled, you may want to disable it. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook, and then click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options.
  3. In the Advanced Options dialog box, click Add-In Manager.
  4. In the Add-In Manager dialog box, click to clear the Net Folders check box, and then click OK three times.
  5. Restart Outlook.
