SYMPTOMS

The Family attribute of the Win32_Processor Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) class returns incorrect values for some processors that run on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. This class returns a value of 0xB9 (185) for the AMD64 Athlon 64 Processor family. The correct value is 0x83 (131).

CAUSE

The current AMD64 Family attribute value for the Win32_Processor class is hard-coded at 0xB9 (185). This value corresponds to the Intel Pentium M processor in the System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) Reference Specification standard.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix has corrected the following values to comply with the current SMBIOS Reference Specification standard:

18h (24) AMD Duron Processor Family
19h (25) K5 Family
1Ah (26) K6 Family
1Bh (27) K6-2
1Ch (28) K6-3
1Dh (29) AMD Athlon Processor Family

For more information about the Win32_Processor class, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

The Win32_Processor class does not distinguish among the following AMD families:

  • Athlon
  • Opteron
  • Sempron
  • Turion

After you apply this hotfix, all 64-bit AMD processors are identified by using a Family attribute value of 0x83 (131).

You can use the following Microsoft Visual Basic script to retrieve the Family attribute values of the processors that are installed on a computer.

set WMI = GetObject("winmgmts:\root\cimv2")
set colCPU = WMI.InstancesOf("Win32_Processor")
for each objCPU in colCPU
    wscript.echo objCPU.DeviceID & " = " & objCPU.Family
