SYMPTOMS
After you change the file type of the latest version of a file to the UTF8 file type in Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 2005, you cannot compare the latest version of the file to any earlier versions of that file. Additionally, if you try to compare the latest version of the file to any earlier versions of that file, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Note This problem occurs after you upgrade from Visual SourceSafe 6.0d to Visual SourceSafe 2005.
CAUSE
After you upgrade from Visual SourceSafe 6.0d to Visual SourceSafe 2005, all file types that are in check-in histories in VSS Explorer are the ANSI/SBCS file type. If you use VSS Explorer to change the file type of the latest version of a file to the UTF8 file type, the file types of all earlier versions of that file are changed from the ANSI/SBCS file type to the Binary file type. After the file types of all earlier versions of that file are changed to the Binary file type, you cannot compare the latest version of a file to any earlier versions of that file.
