This article describes how to add a new user to the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 local Users group. This article also describes how to create a new Console scope so that the new user can view only the computer groups that you specify in the MOM Operator Console.
How to add a new user to the MOM local Users group
- Use an account that has administrative credentials to log on to a computer that has the MOM Administrator Console installed.
- Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
- In the Computer Management window, expand Local Users and Groups, and then click Groups.
- Double-click MOM Users.
- Click the Members tab, and then click Add.
- In the Select User, Contacts, or Computers dialog box, type the name of the user who you want to add, and then click OK two times.
How to create a new Console scope in MOM 2005
- Click Start, point to All Programs, click Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Administrator Console.
- Expand Microsoft Operations Manager (
ServerName), expand Administration, right-click Console Scopes, and then click Create Console Scope.
- On the Welcome to the Create Console Scope Wizard page, click Next.
- Type a name in the Console scope name box, and then click Next.
- Type a description, and then click Next.
- On the Add Computer Groups page, click Add.
- In the Add Computer Groups dialog box, select the computer groups that you want to add, click OK, and then click Next.
- On the Add Users page, click Add.
- In the Domain\User name dialog box, enter the domain name and the user name that you want to add.
Note Make sure that you do not use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the domain when you add the user to the new scope. If you use the FQDN, the user can view all computer groups. The MOM Operators Console does not support FQDNs.
- Click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
When the new user logs on and starts the MOM Operator Console, the new user can view only the scopes that are listed under Groups. Groups contains only the computer groups that you added.
How to troubleshoot Console issues
The MOM Operator Console settings are stored in the user's domain profile. If a user has a local profile that uses the same name as the user's domain profile, the MOM Operator Console settings that are contained in the local profile are used.
If a certain user experiences a problem with the MOM Operator Console and if you have set the permissions correctly, delete the local profile for this user. The user profile is re-created the next time that the user logs on to the computer and starts the MOM Operator Console.
To delete the user profile, follow these steps:
- Restart the computer that has the MOM Operator Console installed. This step clears any files that are locked.
- Use an account that has administrative credentials to log on to the computer.
- Use Windows Explorer to locate the Documents and Settings folder, and then rename the user profile folder.
- Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
- In System Properties, click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings next to User Profiles.
- In User Profiles, select the user account whose profile you want to delete, click Delete, and then click OK.
- Log off the computer, and then log on to the computer by using the user account whose profile you just deleted.
- Click Start, point to All Programs, click Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Operator Console to open the MOM Operator Console.
- To restore the user's previous settings, locate the folder that you renamed in step 3, and then copy the subfolders that you want to the user's new user profile folder. For example, copy the Desktop folder if you want to restore the user's previous desktop settings.
