256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to change the company name and the user name in 2007 Microsoft Office programs after you run the Setup program.

Note These procedures do not work in Microsoft Office 2000 and in earlier versions of Microsoft Office. To change the company name that appears on the Office splash screens and in the About Program name dialog box in these earlier versions of Office, follow these steps:

  1. Remove Office from the computer.
  2. Run the Office Setup program.
  3. Type a new company name.

To determine the program version information in 2007 Office programs that use the new user interface, click the Microsoft Office Button, click Program name Options, click Resources, and then click About. To determine the program version information in 2007 Office programs that do not use the new user interface, such as Microsoft Office Publisher 2007, Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007, and Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007, click About Microsoft Office Program Name on the Help menu.

How to change the company name

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To change the company name that appears in Office programs, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Installer/Userdata/S-1-5-18/Products/{GUID}/InstallProperties

Note GUID represents the product code for the version of Office that is installed, For example, the value "{00002109110000000000000000F01FEC}" represents Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007. More than one GUID will be listed under the Products subkey. Therefore, you must expand each GUID and then look in the InstallProperties folder until you find the GUID that has the correct product name listed for the DisplayName value. For example, you may see the following listed for the DisplayName value:

    Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007

  3. In the Name column, double-click RegCompany.

Note If you do not locate RegCompany, go back to step 2, and then select another registry key under the Products subkey.
  4. Change the text in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  5. Exit Registry Editor.

When you start an Office program, the company name that appears reflects the change that you made in step 4.

How to change the user name

You can change the user name in Microsoft Office Excel 2007, in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, and in Microsoft Office Word 2007. You only have to change the user name in one of these programs to change the user name for the other 2007 Office programs. To change the user name, follow these steps.

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Program name Options.
  2. In the Personalize your copy of Office section, type the user name in the User name box.
  3. Click OK.
