  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Document Library Migration Tools (Spout.exe and Spin.exe) to migrate documents. You migrate the documents from a Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 document library to a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 document library. The documents that you migrate are associated with a document profile in SharePoint Portal Server 2001. The name of a field in the document profile is the same as the name of a property that is contained in the documents.

When you view the documents in the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 document library, you notice that the column in the document library that corresponds to the field in the document profile displays incorrect data. The column incorrectly displays the value of the document property instead of the value of the field in the document profile.

For example, you experience these symptoms if the following conditions are true:

  • You use the Spout.exe tool and the Spin.exe tool to migrate HTML documents from SharePoint Portal Server 2001 to SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
  • The HTML documents contain a title tag (<title>) that defines the title of the document.
  • The document profile that is associated with the HTML documents contains a field that is named Title.

In this scenario, the title that is defined by the title tag appears in the Title column when you view the document in SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services stores document properties instead of document metadata such as document profile properties. The Spin.exe tool does not let you specify that you want to use document metadata when you use the Spin.exe tool to import documents to SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Service pack information

This problem is corrected in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 3. To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix information

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 post-Service Pack 2 Hotfix Package that is dated August 16, 2006. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

924294 Description of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package: August 16, 2006

This hotfix introduces a new /prefermetainfo command-line option for the Spin.exe tool. When you use the Spin.exe tool to import documents from SharePoint Portal Server 2001 document libraries to SharePoint Portal Server 2003 document libraries, you can use the /prefermetainfo command-line option to specify that you want to import document properties.

Important The /prefermetainfo command-line option that is introduced in this hotfix uses the Windows SharePoint Services method that is exposed by the Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 2 hotfix that is dated July 31, 2006. Therefore, you must also install the Windows SharePoint Services post-Service Pack 2 hotfix that is documented in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 3.
