256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

INTRODUCTION

By default, the Memory Diagnostic test that is included with Office Diagnostics for 2007 Microsoft Office products is disabled on computers that are running Microsoft Windows Server. This step-by-step article describes how to enable the Memory Diagnostic test.

MORE INFORMATION

When you run Office Diagnostics for 2007 Office products on a Windows Server-based computer, Memory Diagnostic is disabled. This is because Memory Diagnostic can consume lots of memory. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to run Memory Diagnostic in some server environments.

If you want to test memory on the Windows Server-based computer, you can change the registry to enable Memory Diagnostic. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

  1. Log on to the Windows Server-based computer by using administrator credentials.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Expand the following subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\OffDiag

  4. Click OffDiag, and then locate the DoNotTestMemory entry in the right pane.
  5. Right-click DoNotTestMemory, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, delete 1, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Note When Memory Diagnostic is enabled, any user on the server can test memory.
