Error message when you try to connect to a remote computer during Windows PE startup with the Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack: "0x80072AFC"

Article ID: 924042

Article Last Modified on 10/31/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You use the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack to deploy an operating system image to a destination computer by using a bootable CD-ROM. Then, you receive an error message, and an error message is logged in the OsdInstallWizard.log file.

You receive the error message after Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) starts, and the Welcome screen appears. A dialog box also appears where you can select a program to run. After you select the program that you want, you receive the following error message:

Error occurred trying to request distribution points for this operating system package 0x80072AFC

Additionally, you start the computer, and you select the original client operating system. Or you use Windows PE repair console or the Windows XP repair console, and you try to retrieve the OsdInstallWizard.log that is located in the C:\MININT folder. In either case, the OsdInstallWizard.log file may contain the following error message: Failed to resolve address to server ServerName (11004)

Note In this error message, the ServerName placeholder represents the name of the server that is acting as the distribution point.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the media access control (MAC) address of the network adapter on the destination computer is not available on the network. In this case, the network drivers for the network adapter on the destination computer are not installed or do not load successfully.

You can use the Network Monitor utility to determine the cause of this issue. For more information about how to use the Network Monitor utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

RESOLUTION

To the Windows PE image for the destination computer, add the network adapter drivers that the manufacturer provides. To do this, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1

In the Drivers tab of the image package properties dialog box, you can add the location of the drivers' source files to the image package. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. In the SMS Administrator Console, expand Site Database (SiteCode-SiteName), expand Image Packages, right-click the image package that you want to change, and then click Properties.
  3. In the image package properties dialog box, click the Drivers tab.
  4. Click the Include additional network drivers from this location check box.
  5. Click Browse, select the location of the network drivers, and then click OK two times.

Note A valid Txtsetup.oem file must be present in the network drivers' location. Otherwise, Windows PE update will fail.

Method 2

Create a customized Windows PE image file that can be used with OSD. For more information about how to create a customized Windows PE image file, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

Windows PE provides some network drivers. But these network drivers are not guaranteed to be compatible with all makes and all models of network adapters. You may have to provide the manufacturer's network driver in the OSD package for the network adapter to function correctly.

Detailed instructions about how to add the network drivers to the New Operating System Package Wizard can be found in the "Configuring the OS Deployment package Properties" section in the OSD_FP_Guide.doc. The OSD_FP_Guide.doc file is included in the OSD Feature Pack. To download the OSD Feature Pack, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
