941898 An August 2007 daylight saving time update for Windows Mobile-based devices is available

Notice for users of Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices

If you own a device that is running Microsoft Windows Mobile for Pocket PC or Microsoft Windows Mobile for Smartphone, do not try to edit the registry. The registry modifications that are mentioned in this article are intended only for device manufacturers. Instead, download the update for your device from the following Microsoft Web site:

If you do not update your Windows Mobile-based device, the clock on the device will be incorrect by one hour when daylight saving time (DST) changes occur. Specifically, calendar items will incorrect by one hour during the extended DST period. This period lasts for three weeks in March and for one week in November.

Important This article contains information about how to modify the registry. Make sure that you back up the registry before you modify it. If you modify the registry manually, the device may not start. Additionally, you may lose all the user data on the device.

Disclaimer The information in this article may change based on the results of the Energy Policy Act. This article will be updated as needed. Customers who want to update the time zone by using registry files must fully test the solution before deployment. This article only applies to Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices.

For a Microsoft Windows CE version of this article, see 923027.

INTRODUCTION

Because of the Energy Policy Act, daylight saving time is extended by four weeks in 2007. This change affects the following time zones:

  • GMT-3:30 Newfoundland
  • GMT-4 Atlantic
  • GMT-5 Eastern US
  • GMT-6 Central US
  • GMT-7 Mountain US
  • GMT-8 Pacific US
  • GMT-9 Alaska

The 2006 daylight saving time implementation is as follows:

  • Daylight saving time starts at 02:00 A.M. on April 2, 2006.
  • Daylight saving time ends at 02:00 A.M. on October 29, 2006.

The 2007 daylight saving time implementation is as follows:

  • Daylight saving time starts at 02:00 A.M. on March 11, 2007.
  • Daylight saving time ends at 02:00 A.M. on November 4, 2007.

Clocks change at 02:00 A.M. local time. On March 11, 2007, clocks will move forward one hour from 01:59 A.M. to 03:00 A.M. On November 4, 2007, clocks will move back one hour from 01:59 A.M. to 01:00 A.M.

You can use the following rules to determine the start date and end date for daylight saving time in subsequent years:

  • Daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March.
  • Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday in November.
  • The previous changes occur at 02:00 A.M. local time.

MORE INFORMATION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reset the device to the factory settings. If you do this, you may lose all the user data on the device. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Use the following changes to make sure that Windows Mobile-based devices display daylight saving time correctly in 2007 and in subsequent years.

Important The following changes modify the registry and could make a Windows Mobile-based device unstable if these changes are applied incorrectly. End-users should check whether this update is available from the device manufacturer.

Updated registry key information for the .inf file

The following listing shows .inf file data that contains updated registry key information for Windows Mobile-based devices. OEM device manufacturers can use the following listing to create an .inf file that is contained in a .cab file. The .cab file can then be installed in Windows Mobile-based devices.

Notes on Mexico time zones

This registry modification will also affect the following Mexico time zones:

  • GMT-7 Chihuahua, La Paz
  • GMT-6 Mexico City, Monterrey
  • GMT-8 Tijuana, Baja California

The modification makes the following two changes:

  • Updates the daylight saving time start date and end date for GMT-7 and GMT-6 because some older devices use incorrect data. The modification does not affect devices that are running Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition or later versions of Windows Mobile.
  • Adds a new value for GMT-8. If the user interface language of a device differs from English, the new time zone appears as the English string "GMT-8 Tijuana, Baja California". The time zone will not be localized.
