FIX: Error message when you try to configure a Host Integration Server 2004 client by using the Configuration Wizard: "Error adding logged on user and network service accounts to HIS Admin group"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to configure a Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 client, the Configuration Wizard (Configframework.exe) returns the following error message:

Error adding logged on user and network service accounts to HIS Admin group. Error: A member could not be added to or removed from the local group because the member does not exist.

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • The Host Integration Server 2004 client is installed by using a software installation application.
  • The software installation application runs by using the Network Service account.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Configuration Wizard tries to add the local computer account to the HIS Administrators local group when the Configuration Wizard is run using by the Network Service account. The Configuration Wizard cannot add the local computer account to the HIS Administrators local group. Therefore, the Host Integration Server 2004 client configuration fails with the error that is described in the “Symptoms” section.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, run the Configuration Wizard to configure a Host Integration Server 2004 client. To do this, log on to the computer that is running Host Integration Server 2004 by using a regular Microsoft Windows user account.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply this hotfix, the Configuration Wizard can successfully configure a Host Integration Server 2004 client when the Network Service account starts the ConfigFrameWork.exe file. To apply this hotfix, follow these steps:

  1. Create a share, and then copy the Host Integration Server 2004 installation files to the share.
  2. In the \MSI\Client\PFiles\system folder, replace the HISConfig.dll file and the HISConfig.pdb file by using the updated files from this hotfix.


Note You can also copy these two files in the \MSI\Server\PFiles\system directory to replace the files for Host Integration Server 2004 server installations.

  1. Install the Host Integration Server 2004 client from the network share that you created in step 1.
