SYMPTOMS
In a project that is based on Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, an obvious delay occurs when the project uses a slow I/O device and a fast I/O device at the same time.
Note An example of a slow I/O device is a floppy disk. An example of a fast I/O device is a hard disk.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of the excess protection from the Visual C++ runtime. If you open multiple files on different I/O devices, the Visual C++ runtime must acquire some critical sections to make sure that the shared resources are correctly serialized.
Note Critical sections are a kind of mechanism that prohibits more than one thread from running a particular section of code at a time.
