APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 Enterprise Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

  • You are using the Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Driver for DB2 to access IBM DB2 system catalog tables.
  • The ODBC Driver for DB2 is included in Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004.
  • The IBM DB2 system catalog tables are in an IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB) for an IBM z/OS Version 8 computer. The computer is running in Enable New Function Mode.

In this scenario, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

[Microsoft] [ODBC Driver] General error.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when an IBM DB2 UDB for an IBM z/OS computer is migrated to an IBM DB2 UDB for an z/OS Version 8 computer. When the IBM DBS UDB is migrated, some columns in the system catalog tables are expanded from VARCHAR (18) to VARCHAR (128). The ODBC Driver for DB2 was not designed to support the column size changes that are implemented in the newer version of the IBM DB2 UDB.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The longest unqualified column name in the IBM DB2 UDB is still 30 characters. This is true even though some columns in the system catalog tables are increased from VARCHAR(18) to VARCHAR(128) in the IBM DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 computers.
