SYMPTOMS
You cannot use the Itanium-based version of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (Vcredist_ia64.exe) to deploy the Itanium-based version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
This problem occurs when you apply a hotfix to the Visual C++ Runtime Library before you try to deploy the Visual C++ Runtime Library.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the correct DLL versions or dependency on code changes may not exist in the Visual C++ Runtime Library. The dependency on code changes or the DLL versions are included in an updated version of the original Visual C++ Runtime Library files.
Visual C++ Runtime Library hotfixes are intended to be applied on a computer that is running Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. However, the hotfixes may not update the Vcredist_ia64.exe program that you use to deploy the new Visual C++ Runtime Library.
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites
Before you apply this hotfix, you must first use the Itanium-based version of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (Vcredist_ia64.exe) to deploy the Itanium-based version of the Visual C++ Runtime Library.
Restart requirement
You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use Microsoft Windows Installer to build an .msi file that deploys the Visual C++ Runtime Library. Windows Installer uses merge module (.msm) files to import the Visual C++ Runtime Library files into the installation.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
