SYMPTOMS
When you try to build a Web project in Microsoft Visual Basic 2005, the operation may be unsuccessful. You may also receive the following error message:
You receive the error message even though the project correctly references the System.XML assembly.
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- The Web project references a Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 assembly.
- The .NET assembly uses a file reference.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because a bug exists in the Visual Basic 2005 compiler.
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

File information
The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
This hotfix includes two packages. One package is for Visual Studio 2005, and one package is for the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. You must install both packages, especially for Web projects. The two packages are zipped into one file.
The Visual Studio 2005 package is named VS80-KB919904-X86-ENU.exe and includes the following two files:
