SYMPTOMS

When you use proxy autoconfiguration for Internet Explorer connectivity in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows HTTP Services (WinHTTP) may not connect through the proxy server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because WinHTTP does not read the location of the proxy autoconfiguration .pac file from the registry. The automatic configuration script file writes this location to the registry.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

The automatic configuration script file contains the string that WinHTTP needs. The string resembles the following string.

AutoConfigJSURL=http://www.contoso.com/proxy.pac
