SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) cannot reverse-synchronize users by using the MSDSS tool. When this problem occurs, you may receive the following error message:

Windows cannot run the initial reverse synchronization or migration session. An extended error has occurred.

Additionally, the MSDSS log file contains the following entry:

Error code (0x800704b8): An extended error has occurred (0xfffffd77)

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a problem in the Adsnwnds.dll file. The Adsnwnds.dll file allocates only a 16 kilobyte (KB) buffer for the Novell bhConfigRW attribute. The contents of this attribute may exceed 16 KB.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, find the user of the large bhConfigRW attribute in the Novell Directory Services (NDS) tree. To do this, import the users by one group at a time. When you find the user, trim the bhConfigRW attribute in the NDS tree.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
