SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1, an access violation error may occur in the W3wp.exe process if both of the following conditions are true:

  • Hotfix 908521 is installed or security update 933729 is installed.
  • The remote procedure call (RPC) over HTTP proxy networking component is enabled.

When this problem occurs, the following events are logged in the Application log.

Description: Application pool 'DefaultAppPool' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because a notification is incorrectly sent to the application by using RPC over HTTP.

Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003.

Note The x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 include the features and fixes that are included in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. If you have an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, you do not have to install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
