SUMMARY

Microsoft has released Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 (11.2.0). This article describes the service pack.

INTRODUCTION

This article discusses Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2. This service pack provides expanded support for Microsoft Exchange Server accounts, performance improvements, security enhancements, and increased stability for Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, Microsoft Excel 2004 for Mac, Microsoft PowerPoint 2004 for Mac, and Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac. Additionally, this service pack includes all the improvements that were released in Microsoft Office 2004 Service Pack 1 (11.1.0), in the Office 2004 for Mac 11.1.1 Update, and in the international proofing tools updates.

We strongly recommend that system administrators install this service pack before you deploy Entourage 2004 for Mac in an organization. This service pack fixes many Entourage 2004 for Mac issues. These issues include improved support for Exchange Server accounts and migration issues from Microsoft Entourage X for Mac.

MORE INFORMATION

Improvements that are included in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2

Improvements for Exchange Server accounts

If your organization uses Exchange Server to store information such as e-mail messages, contacts, and calendar items, Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 enhances the ability to access and modify this information from your Macintosh computer. Continual and automatic synchronization of all your Entourage 2004 for Mac messages, contacts, and calendar events with a server that is running Exchange Server is greatly improved in this service pack. Additionally, new Exchange Server account features have been added.

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 includes the following improvements:

  • Delegation access

You can use Entourage 2004 for Mac to delegate the management of your e-mail, calendar events, and address book contacts to someone else.

  • Public folders

You can subscribe to public folders, create your own Exchange Server public folders, and access calendars and contacts that are stored in public folders.

  • Sharing

You can share your address books, calendars, and mail folders with other Exchange Server users. You can open any address book, calendar, or mail folder that has been shared with you on an Exchange server. You can also mark contacts and calendar events as private in shared address books and calendars.

  • Multiple address books, calendars, and mail folders

You can use Entourage 2004 for Mac to create multiple address books, calendars, and mail folders on an Exchange server.

  • Global address list

You can look up contact information that is stored in the global address list (GAL). When you type an e-mail address or the name of a contact, Entourage 2004 for Mac automatically finishes the address or name when it matches an entry in the GAL.

  • Exchange Server account synchronization

Contacts and calendar events synchronize quickly and correctly with Exchange Server address books and calendars based on the synchronization options in your account settings.

  • Calendar

The calendar responds more quickly when you view and search for calendar events. Overall stability is improved, and attachments in calendar events are preserved. Additionally, you can change every field when you modify a single occurrence of a recurring event.

  • Group by conversation

You can group e-mail messages by conversation.

  • Mailbox quotas

You can use Entourage 2004 for Mac to see the sizes of all folders in an Exchange Server account.

Important Exchange Server folders that are not in your mailbox, such as delegated folders and public folders, are read-only unless the appropriate update is installed on the Exchange server. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

For printer drivers that support paper-size subsets, Word previously used the last paper size in a subset if you did not specify a paper size. Now, Word uses the first paper size in the subset if you do not specify a paper size. For example, Word uses the standard US Letter paper size at the top of most US Letter paper-size subsets.

  • Performance is improved for address books that contain more than 5,000 contacts

This service pack improves performance when you use Word with an Entourage address book that contains many contacts. Word can be used with Entourage address books that contain up to 32,000 contacts.

This service pack includes an improved text-layout engine that provides more compatibility between Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows and Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac. Therefore, text layout in both operating systems should look much more similar and should contain fewer text-wrapping differences. Because earlier versions of PowerPoint for Mac do not include the improved text-layout engine, you may see a small difference in text layout in PowerPoint 2004 for Mac compared to earlier versions of PowerPoint for Mac.

Playback performance for movie files that use QuickTime-supported codecs is significantly improved in this service pack. To improve playback performance during presentations that use two monitors, movies play on only the main presentation screen. They do not play on the presenter tools screen.

  • Only one message displays if the required fonts are missing

This service pack fixes an issue that causes PowerPoint to display a series of repetitive messages and sometimes close unexpectedly if the required fonts are not present on the computer. Now, PowerPoint displays one message per session when the required fonts are missing. Additionally, there is an option not to show the message again.

Improvements for Entourage 2004 for Mac

  • End times adjust correctly after you modify a single occurrence of a recurring calendar event

In earlier versions of Entourage for Mac, when you change the end time of a single occurrence of a recurring calendar event and then print your calendar by using the Weekly view, the printout includes the end time of the recurring meeting instead of the modified end time of the single occurrence. This service pack fixes this issue.

  • Performance is improved for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

Entourage 2004 for Mac 11.2 is optimized to prevent performance issues with new technologies that are introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). These technologies include the Spotlight search feature. Without this service pack, Entourage 2004 for Mac performance may decrease under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

  • Delegate access works with Exchange servers in a front-end or back-end topology

Delegates can now synchronize mailbox information for the mailbox owner through Exchange servers in a front-end or back-end topology through the front-end server. Previously, delegates needed direct access through the firewall to the back-end server to synchronize mailbox information for the mailbox owner.

  • Stability is improved for nested groups in the address book

This service pack fixes an issue that causes Entourage not to send an e-mail message to a nested group in the address book. A nested group is a group that contains one or more other groups.

  • Stability is improved for HTML e-mail messages

Some users have reported strange display behavior when they compose or view HTML e-mail messages in Entourage 2004 for Mac. For example, right-justified text and oversized fonts may appear in entry fields. Alternatively, unexpected error messages may be displayed when users access other Entourage features after they view an HTML e-mail message. This service pack fixes this issue.

This service pack fixes an issue that prevents Entourage from importing mail, rules, and signatures from Apple Mail in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

  • Attachment size limits on sent messages are correctly enforced

This service pack fixes an issue that prevents Entourage from correctly enforcing the attachment size limit on messages that are sent through an Exchange server. This problem causes sent messages that have attachments that exceed the size limit to remain in the Outbox. This causes transaction log files on the Exchange server to grow at an unexpected rate. After this service pack is installed, Entourage alerts users when they try to send an e-mail message that has an attachment that exceeds the size limit that is enforced by the Exchange server.

  • Updated definitions for the Junk E-mail Filter
