    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems

INTRODUCTION

This article describes an update that is available for the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) feature.

This update fixes the following problems:

  • On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that has many shadow copies that are being used, the paged pool memory on the computer may become exhausted. This problem may occur when the shadow copy snapshots are of large volumes and when each volume contains many files.

After you install this update, Windows Server 2003 dismounts the shadow copies when either of the following conditions is true at the time of shadow copy creation:
    • There is less than 80 MB of system paged pool available
    • VSS is using more than 128 MB of paged pool for mounted shadow copies.

This problem was first addressed in the Volume Shadow Copy update that was previously released in KB 891957. The previous release of this fix in KB 891957 may not perform shadow copy dismounts efficiently enough on servers that heavily use the Shadow Copies for Shared Folders feature.

Note Windows Server 2003 remounts the dismounted shadow copies when a client computer accesses the shadow copy.

Additionally, an associated fix is included for client computers that use the Shadow Copies for Shared Folders feature. The server fix that is described in this article helps make the clients that use this feature more efficient because the Shadow Copy Client will not mount shadow copies unnecessarily.

Note To use this functionality, you must also install a fix on the client computer. This Shadow Copy Client fix is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

903234 An update is available to optimize the way that the Shadow Copy Client accesses shadow copies in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP

  • In some scenarios, VSS does not maintain the shadow copy device name across the BreakSnapshotSet() API.
  • When you delete multiple hardware shadow copy sets at the same time, an error may occur in the DeleteSnapshotSet() API, and the delete operation fails.
  • This update removes a SKU block that previously let you create and import transportable shadow copies only on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, and on versions of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition. After you install the update, you can create and import transportable shadow copies on all Windows Server 2003 operating systems.
  • After you install the Volume Shadow Copy update from KB 891957 on the computer, you may receive a "STOP: 0x00000054 (LM_SERVER_INTERNAL_ERROR)" error message. This error message occurs because of a problem with the version of the Srv.sys file that was included in the KB 891957 update. This update resolves that problem.

Technical support for x64-based versions of Microsoft Windows

If your hardware came with a Microsoft Windows x64 edition already installed, your hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for the Windows x64 edition. In this case, your hardware manufacturer provides support because a Windows x64 edition was included with your hardware. Your hardware manufacturer might have customized the Windows x64 edition installation by using unique components. Unique components might include specific device drivers or might include optional settings to maximize the performance of the hardware. Microsoft will provide reasonable-effort assistance if you must have technical help with a Windows x64 edition. However, you might have to contact your manufacturer directly. Your manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that your manufacturer installed on the hardware. If you purchased a Windows x64 edition such as a Windows Server 2003 x64 edition separately, contact Microsoft for technical support.
