SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the Exchange System Manager to administer a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 installation that is running on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer. You take this action after you configure a security policy for the Exchange server in the Security Configuration Wizard that is installed on the same computer. In this scenario, you experience the following symptoms:

  • When you click the HTTP folder under the Protocols folder for the Exchange server, you receive the following error message:

    The RPC server is unavailable.
    Facility: Win32
    ID no: 800706ba

    Additionally, after you click OK to dismiss the error message, the status of the HTTP Exchange Virtual Server is displayed as "unknown."

    Note The Protocols folder is under the Exchange server object for the particular Exchange installation in the Exchange System Manager.
  • When you click the IMAP4 folder under the Protocols folder for the Exchange server, the status of the default IMAP4 Virtual Server is displayed as "unknown."
  • When you click the POP3 folder under the Protocols folder for the Exchange server, the status of the default POP3 Virtual Server is displayed as "unknown."
  • When you click the SMTP folder under the Protocols folder for the Exchange server, the status of the default SMTP Virtual Server is displayed as "unknown."
  • When you click the NNTP folder under the Protocols folder for the Exchange server, the default NNTP Virtual Server does not appear in the NNTP folder.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Security Configuration Wizard does not include the Inetinfo.exe file in the firewall exception list.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix on x86 and Itanium-based versions of Windows Server 2003, you must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, you do have to run and configure the Security Configuration Wizard again.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
