FIX: You may receive an error message from the compiler when you compile a managed Windows Media Services SDK project

SYMPTOMS

When you compile a managed Microsoft Windows Media Services SDK project that uses the Microsoft.WindowsMediaServices.dll interop assembly, you may receive the following error message from the compiler:

The type 'interop_msxml.IXMLDOMDocument' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'interop_msxml, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'.

CAUSE

The Interop_msxml.dll interop assembly that is included with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and with Microsoft Platform SDK SP1 is not correctly strong named.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

In some instances, you may receive the following error message from the compiler after installing this hotfix:

System.IO.FileLoadException: The located assembly's manifest definition with name 'interop_msxml' does not match the assembly reference.

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method:

  • If you are not using an ASP.NET application, add the following XML code to the %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<VERSION>\config\machine.config file.
  • If you are using an ASP.NET application, add the following XML code to the Web.config file.
