You receive a "Disk read error has occurred" error message when you use the Winnt32.exe program to reinstall Windows XP on a computer that has both Windows XP and Windows Vista installed

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Winnt32.exe program to reinstall Microsoft Windows XP on a computer that has both Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista installed, you receive the following error message:

Disk read error has occurred.

Additionally, the computer stops responding (hangs).

Note This problem occurs in this situation when any version of Windows Vista is installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you select the boot legacy operating system and launch setup options when you run the Winnt32.exe program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to reinstall Windows XP.

Method 2

If you use the Winnt32.exe program to reinstall Windows XP, make sure that you select the launch setup option and not the boot legacy operating system option.

Note These options appear when you restart the computer after you run the Winnt32.exe program.
