SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, install a language pack, and then run the Sysprep utility to reseal the image. Then, you run the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard. In this scenario, you are prompted to enter the product key. This behavior occurs even though the product key was correctly sealed in the installation package.

Note The product key is also known as the product ID (PID).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Oobeinfo.ini file is replaced during the installation of the language pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually enter the product key when you run the OOBE Wizard. Then, follow the steps in the wizard to activate your copy of Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
