SUMMARY

Microsoft has released a service pack for Microsoft Office 2003 that contains fixes for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003.


INTRODUCTION

Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides the latest updates to Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003. Office 2003 SP2 contains security enhancements, stability improvements, and performance improvements. Some of the fixes that are included with Office 2003 SP2 have been previously released in Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or in separate updates. This service pack combines previously released fixes into one update.

You receive the "The specified device is now being closed" error message when you try to play a movie in PowerPoint 2003

PowerPoint 2003 may stop responding (hang) when one of the following conditions is true:

  • You try to play a movie.
  • You try to end a movie by clicking off the movie object.

Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

MCI Error

The specified device is now being closed. Wait a few seconds and then try again.

Note You do not experience this problem with all the movies that you play in a PowerPoint 2003 presentation. Some movies may play as expected.

There is unexpected text in the table cells when you paste a blank table in PowerPoint 2003

When you paste a blank table in a PowerPoint 2003 presentation, the table may be pasted with unexpected text in the table cells.

Sound file does not play when you open a presentation in PowerPoint 2003

You open a presentation in PowerPoint 2003 that contains a sound file. This sound file is set to play automatically when the presentation is opened. If the presentation was created in a version of Microsoft PowerPoint that is earlier than PowerPoint 2003, the sound file does not play when you open the presentation.

You receive an error message in module Mso.dll when you open a presentation in PowerPoint 2003

When you try to open a presentation that contains corrupted slides in PowerPoint 2003, the presentation does not open. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office PowerPoint has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Note When you open a presentation that contains corrupted slides after you install Office 2003 SP2, the following actions occur:

  • Any corrupted slide that is in the presentation is replaced with a blank slide.
  • Any corrupted slide note that is no longer linked with its slide is not displayed in the presentation.

Additionally, you will receive the following message:

Microsoft Office PowerPoint

PowerPoint was unable to display some of the text, images, or objects on slides in the
file, filename.ppt, because they have become corrupted. Effected slides
have been replaced by blank slides in the presentation and it is not possible to recover
the lost information. To ensure that the file can be opened in previous versions of
PowerPoint, use the Save As command (File menu) and save the file with either the
same or a new name.



A slide show can be advanced when you scroll or click the wheel of a wheel mouse

You use a wheel mouse to view a presentation in PowerPoint 2003. If you scroll or click the wheel of the mouse, you are unexpectedly able to advance the slides in the presentation.

This problem occurs when either of the following conditions is true:

  • You enable the Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) feature. To enable the Browsed at a kiosk (full screen) feature, click Set Up Show on the Slide Show menu.
  • You have disabled the Advance slide On mouse click feature. To disable the Advance slide On mouse click feature, click Slide Transition on the Slide Show menu.



Hyperlinks do not work in a presentation that uses the Hyperlink base property

When you click a hyperlink in a presentation that opens a different slide in the presentation, the slide does not open. This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • The presentation is moved from the computer that it was created on.
  • The presentation uses the Hyperlink base property.



You receive the "The Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer could not start" error message when you try to start Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003

When you try to start PowerPoint Viewer 2003 on a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, the viewer does not start. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

The Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer could not start. This version of the PowerPoint Viewer is only supported on Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.



A Microsoft Visio drawing with multiple pages is inserted as a single object when you use the Data Assistant add-in

You insert a Visio drawing that contains multiple pages in a PowerPoint 2003 presentation. If you use the Data Assistant add-in to insert the Visio drawing, only one object is inserted. This object contains all the Visio drawing pages. You expect that an object for each Visio drawing page would be inserted in the PowerPoint presentation.

A PowerPoint presentation must be resaved after you turn off the standby feature on the computer

You open a PowerPoint 2003 presentation from a received e-mail message. Then, you close the e-mail message. If you put the computer on standby, you receive the following error message when you turn off the standby feature on the computer:

During the suspended state the connection to the original file was lost and the original file is no longer available. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKC\filename.ppt must be re-saved.



You cannot change a presentation when it contains one or more read-only embedded fonts in PowerPoint 2003

When you open a presentation in PowerPoint 2003 that contains one or more embedded fonts, you cannot change the presentation. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

This presentation cannot be edited because it contains one or more read-only embedded (restricted) fonts. To edit the presentation you must remove the restricted fonts, or you can open the presentation as read-only.

Read-only embedded fonts included in this presentation:

fontname

If you click Remove Restricted Fonts, the read-only fonts are removed. Then, you can change the presentation.

If you click Open Read-Only, the read-only fonts are retained in the presentation. Then, you cannot change the presentation.
