INTRODUCTION

This article contains information about the prerequisites that are required to install Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft only supports Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition starting with SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2. This support is not for the native x64 Edition. Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 can only run in Microsoft Windows in Windows (WOW) mode.

Before you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition, you must follow these steps:

  1. If you install Internet Information Services (IIS) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition, IIS must be configured to run in 32-bit emulation mode. To do this, follow these steps on each front-end Web server that is running Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, move to the %drive%:\Inetpub\Adminscripts folder. Note that %drive% is the drive on which Windows Server 2003 is installed.
    3. In the Adminscripts folder, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

      cscript adsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

      Note The value "1" for Enable32bitAppOnWin64 specifies 32-bit mode. The value "0" specifies 64-bit mode.
    4. Type iisreset, and then press ENTER.
    5. Close the Command Prompt window.
  2. Install the following software and software updates on the computer that is running Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition:
    • .NET Framework 1.1
    • .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

      To download .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    • The .NET Framework 1.1 hotfix that is referenced in the following Microsoft Knowledge base article 896000.

    Note You must enable the ASP.NET 1.1 Web service extension before you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services.
    2. Expand computer name.
    3. Click the Web Service Extensions tab.
    4. Click Allow next to ASP.NET 1.1.4322.

  3. Install the original version of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 preferably as the first item in the subsequent list:

    If the computer in which you are installing SharePoint Portal Server 2003 has more than 2 gigabytes (GB) of Random Access Memory (RAM) installed, you must configure Microsoft Windows to use less than or equal to 2GB of RAM during the installation.

    It is recommended that you configure Windows to recognize a maximum of 1GB of RAM for the installation process. This should be accomplished by booting the computer by using a boot entry that uses the /burnmemory boot parameter. The /burnmemory boot parameter reduces the memory that is available to Windows by the amount that is specified in the parameter. For example, if the computer has 6GB of RAM installed, the following /burnmemory parameter would reduce the memory that is available to Windows down to 1GB:

    /burnmemory=5054

    Note This value is changed after a computer reboot.

    This process would effectively reduce the memory to 1024 MB (1GB) and allow the installation of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to proceed.

    Note that you must reboot the computer after you edit the boot options to reflect the /burnmemory boot parameter changes. After you have completed the subsequent steps and have successfully installed SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2, you can remove the /burnmemory boot parameter. Then, you can restart the computer to allow Windows to recognize the full amount of RAM that is installed in the computer.

    Note that you may experience the following situations during your installation process:

    1. You may receive a warning dialog with the following message:

      SharePoint Portal Server 2003 has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows. For more information, refer to http://support.microsoft.com/sppsvr2003.

      If you have already installed the .NET Framework 1.1 hotfix that is referenced in step 2, click Continue to continue the installation process. Otherwise, you must click Cancel. Then, you must install the .NET Framework 1.1 hotfix that is referenced in step 2. After you install this hotfix, restart the installation process.
    2. When you see the Installation Type and File Location page in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Setup Wizard dialog box during your installation process, follow these steps:
      1. Click Browse in the Programs field.
      2. Remove the opening and the closing parentheses in the Program Files (x86) option that is in the Folder path text box.
      3. Click OK.

        For example, this means that you change "Program Files (x86)" to "Program Files x86."
      4. Go back to the Installation Type and File Location page in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Setup Wizard dialog box.
      5. Click Browse in the Data field

        Remove the opening and closing parentheses in the Program Files (x86) option that is in the Folder path text box.
      6. Click OK.
    3. Click Next to continue the installation process.
  4. Make sure that the virtual server has an authentication method enabled to browse the new SharePoint Portal Server site. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services.
    2. Under Web Sites, right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Directory Security tab, and then click Edit under Authentication and access control.
    4. Click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box, and then click OK.
  5. Install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (SP2). To install Windows SharePoint Services SP2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  6. After you install the original version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2, you are ready to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2.
