You may receive a "Stop 0x0000000A" error message when you shut down or restart a computer that is running Windows Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you shut down or restart a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you may receive the following Stop error message:

      • Stop 0x0000000A (parameter 1, parameter 2, parameter 3, parameter 4)


IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

In this error message:

  • Parameter 1 represents the referenced memory location.
  • Parameter 2 represents the IRQL.
  • Parameter 3 represents a read operation or a write operation.


A read operation has a value of 0. A write operation has a value of 1.

  • Parameter 4 represents the address from which the memory location was referenced.


CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile local security policy setting is enabled.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable the Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile local security policy setting. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the Group Policy Object Editor dialog box, expand Computer Configuration, expand Windows Settings, expand Security Settings, expand Local Policies, and then click Security Options.
  3. In the right pane, double-click Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile.
  4. In the Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile Properties dialog box that appears, click Disabled, and then click OK.
  5. Quit the Group Policy Object Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
