Microsoft distributes SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.
SUMMARY
This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
- The issues that are fixed by the hotfix package
- The prerequisites for applying the hotfix package
- Whether you must restart the computer after you apply the hotfix package
- Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
- Whether you must make any registry changes after you apply the hotfix package
- The files that are contained in the hotfix package
SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft SQL Server 2000, the SQL Server 2000 automatic database recovery mechanism verifies the consistency of each database.
If an index contains a FLOAT data type or a REAL data type, and this data type contains a not-a-number (NaN) value, the SQL Server 2000 automatic database recovery operation may not succeed. In this situation, the database becomes unavailable for user access.
RESOLUTION
For a list of all publicly released SQL Server 2000 Post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
810185 SQL Server 2000 hotfix update for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and 3a
Note This hotfix is available for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.
Note The hotfix prevents insertion and update of a real type column or of a float type column that is indexed and that contains a NaN value. The hotfix will not fix the problem if you have already experienced it. In this case, the hotfix does not work because it is not possible to sort all NaN values.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft SQL Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
Prerequisites

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
- Perform NaN validation checks in client applications when you use remote procedure calls (RPCs). Make sure that NaN values are not passed to SQL Server 2000.
Check existing data rows that contain the FLOAT data type or the REAL data type. Look for NaN values. To do this, run the following query:
SELECT <unique column list>, CONVERT(varchar(30),<float column or real column1>) FROM <table name> WHERE ISNUMERIC(<float column or real column>) = 0
In this query:
- Replace
<unique column list>
with a list of one or more column names that are separated by commas to uniquely identify the row in the particular table. - Replace
with the name of the table that you want to search.
- Replace
<float column or real column>
with the name of the column.
Method 2
Do not create indexes that are based on FLOAT columns or on REAL columns.
Method 3
If you can use a precise numeric type in your environment, change the data type of the real or of the float column to the numeric type or the decimal type.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
MORE INFORMATION
You can also insert NaN values by using a bulk copy operation. However, in this situation, certain language events such as INSERT statements report an invalid floating point number and do not insert the row.
The following list contains some examples of NaN values:- Positive infinity
- Negative infinity
- Zero divided by zero (0/0)
- Quiet NaNs (QNaN)
- Signaling NaNs (SNaN)
For more information about NaNs, see the Intel Architecture Software Developer's Manual. To obtain this manual, visit the following Intel Web site:
