SYMPTOMS

If you try to rotate an image file in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, you receive the following error message:

Because this image is read-only, the rotated version cannot be saved using the same file name. To save it, click Copy To and give it a new file name.

This symptom occurs if you access an image file that is stored on a shared location. Additionally, you experience the following symptoms:

  • You cannot save the image file by using a new file name.
  • The file is removed from the shared location. This symptom occurs if you try to save the image file by using the same name after you use the Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) path of the shared location to access the image file.

You experience these symptoms if the following conditions are true:

  1. The image file is stored in a shared folder on a remote computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This remote computer is joined to a domain.
  2. You have set the change permission for the Everyone group on the shared location.
  3. You use a domain user account without administrative rights to access the share from another Windows XP-based client computer or Windows Server 2003-based client computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows Picture and Fax Viewer uses the ReplaceFile Application Programming Interface (API). Windows Picture and Fax Viewer uses the ReplaceFilewithout API without using the REPLACEFILE_IGNORE_MERGE_ERRORS flag.
