Visio 2002 is not installed on client computers after you apply the MS05-005 security update to an administrative installation point

Article ID: 895926

Article Last Modified on 3/18/2005

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You update an administrative installation point of Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or Microsoft Visio 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP2) with the MS05-005 security update. Then, you perform a typical installation of Visio 2002 by using the "Install Now!" setup option in full user interface on client computers. When you do this, the installation appears to be completed very quickly. However, Visio 2002 does not install on the client computers. Additionally, the Visio10 subfolder is not created in the Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder on the client computers.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an issue in the InstallUISequence table in the Visio2002-KB873354-FullFile.msp file. The Visio2002-KB873354-FullFile.msp file is included in the MS05-005 security update. All features in the feature table are disabled. Therefore, no components of the program are installed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods, depending on your situation:

  • Install Visio 2002 silently by using one of the following command-line switches to set the display setting for the Setup program:

    /q, /qn, /qn+, /qb, /qb-, /qb+

    For more information about setup command-line switches that you can use, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    826530 Description of setup command-line switches for Office 2003

  • Set the display setting in the [Display] section of the Setup.ini file to one of the following values, and then install Visio 2002:
    • DISPLAY=None
    • DISPLAY=Basic
    Note The DISPLAY=None setting in the Setup.ini file is the same as using the /q or /qn command-line switch. The DISPLAY=Basic setting in the Setup.ini file is the same as using the /qb or /qb- command-line switch.
  • Do not update the Visio 2002 administrative installation point with the MS05-005 security update. Perform a chained installation of the MS05-005 security update at the end of the Visio 2002 installation. By doing this, a full installation of Visio 2002 occurs first. Then, the MS05-005 security update is installed. For more information about how to perform a chained installation, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    You can also use the command-line switch /q for the MS05-005 security update in the chained installation to perform a quiet installation of the MS05-005 security update. For more information about the supported setup switches, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    197147 Command-line switches for IExpress software update packages

  • Install Visio 2002 by using the Full display setting. To do this, use one of the following methods.
    • Do not use the /q command-line switch.
    • Use the /qf command-line switch.
    • Do not change the default settings for the [Display] section of the Setup.ini file.
    • Set the display setting in the [Display] section of the Setup.ini file to DISPLAY=Full.

    Additionally, add the following properties and values to the [Options] section of the Setup.ini file:

    ADDLOCAL=ALL
    REMOVE=Solutions,Addons
    ADVERTISE=Developer_Reference_Help

    For the English version of Visio 2002, using these properties and values installs Visio 2002 with the "typical" configuration. In this configuration, the templates that use "US" units are installed, but the templates that use metric units are not installed.

    We do not recommend that you use this method if you use a custom transform (.mst) file because the properties and values in the Setup.ini file take precedence over the feature installation states that are specified in an .mst file.

    Note If you use this method, make sure that you use the exact syntax of the values. There is a comma between “Solutions” and “Addons” in the values.
  • Install Visio 2002 interactively from the user interface of the Setup program by using the Customize Setup option.
