SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 crashes if you click a button or scroll through a page to view its contents. This symptom occurs if you use Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 with Internet Explorer 6.

Note This problem also occurs if you use any other program that hosts the WebBrowser/MSHTML control with Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the InfoPath form changes at the same time that you interact with the form. Typically, this problem occurs if the view is switched at the same time that you click a button or you scroll through a page to view its contents. This problem also occurs if the database data updates the view at the same time that you click a button or you scroll through a page to view its contents.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

After you apply this hotfix, you must change the registry to turn the hotfix on. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Expand the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

  3. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_CHECK_UNPOSITIONED_ELEMENT_KB893371, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.
  5. Click the new FEATURE_CHECK_UNPOSITIONED_ELEMENT_KB893371 registry subkey.
  6. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  7. Type infopath.exe, and then press ENTER.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  9. In the Value data box, type 00000001, and then click OK.
  10. Quit Registry Editor.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer 6.
