SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, when you run a large and complex query plan that uses hash operators, you experience delays when SQL Server 2000 compiles and optimizes the plan for the query. You also receive a 17883 error message in the SQL Server 2000 error log that is similar to the following:

Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0
Process 60:0 (16f0) UMS Context 0x000006FBFEA849F0 appears to be non-yielding on Scheduler 3.

You may experience these symptoms when SQL Server 2000 is running on a 32-bit computer or on a 64-bit computer that has 16 gigabytes (GB) or more GB of physical RAM installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when a worker thread does not allow the User Mode Scheduling (UMS) scheduler to allocate CPU cycles as expected.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

You must restart the MSSQL Server service after you apply this hotfix.

You do not have to create or modify any registry keys to enable this hotfix.
