APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you dynamically add a host connection to an active Microsoft SNA Server service (Snaservr.exe), the host connection may show a Pending status and may not become active. When this problem occurs, an event that is similar to the following may be logged in the Application log: Event ID: 56
Description: Connection connection name failed: XID rejected by remote computer.

The problem only occurs if you have defined the dynamically added host connection by using a Network name value or a Control point name value that is eight characters long.

CAUSE

The SNA Server service incorrectly truncates the Network name value and the Control point name value to seven characters when the SNA Server service parses these values for a dynamically added host connection.

RESOLUTION

Host Integration Server 2004

WORKAROUND

To make the host connection correctly start, stop and then restart the SNA Server service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

To determine whether you are experiencing this problem, you can use the SNA Trace Utility (Snatrace.exe) to capture the activation sequence for the new host connection. The following example shows how to identify the problem.

Assume that you add a new host connection to an active SNA Server service by using the following values:

Network name Control point name
APPNTEST SDLCTEST

A Data Link Control message trace on the SNA Server service that captures the activation sequence for the new host connection would include the following Send XID (SXID) message:

DLC   01020300->06160000 DLCST SXID
DLC
DLC ---- Header at address 01194480, 1 elements ----
DLC 1AFF000C 10110D00 00000700 01006409 <..............d.>

DLC 00010B00 00010900 00000007 00103700 <..............7.>
DLC 23110C08 04F0F5F0 F0F0F00F 06D4E240 <#....050000..MS@>
DLC C84BC94B E2C5D9E5 C5D90908 F0F0F0F0 <HKIKSERVER..0000>
DLC F0F0F013 11031000 10F0F0F0 F0F0F0F0 <000......0000000>
DLC F0F0F0F0 F0F00E10 F4C1D7D7 D5E3C5E2 <000000..4APPNTES>
DLC 4BE2C4D3 C3E3C5E2 <KSDLCTES >

The last fifteen bytes of the trace data includes the fully-qualified control point name (Network name.Control point name) that is configured in the properties of the host connection. In this example, the trace data has the following value:

APPNTES.SDLCTES

The configured Network name value and Control point name value are truncated in the XID message that is sent to the host system.

Note The Trace Viewer that is used to view Host Integration Server trace files displays an EBCDIC period (.) as an ASCII uppercase K.
