SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, when you perform a SORT operation or a CREATE INDEX operation on a computer that has several GB of physical RAM, you receive the following error message:

Error: 17803, Severity: 20, State: 14 Insufficient memory available..

When this problem occurs, the performance counter Free pages for the SQLServer:Buffer Manager object will approach 0. Additionally, you may receive the following error message in the SQL Server error log:

LazyWriter: warning, no free buffers found. Buffer Distribution: Stolen=2070184 Free=0 Procedures=600 Inram=0 Dirty=9850 Kept=0 I/O=0, Latched=140, Other=5599226 Buffer Counts: Commited=7680000 Target=7680000 Hashed=5609216 InternalReservation=218 ExternalReservation=466065 Min Free=1536

Note In this error message the most significant information is that the Free value is 0 and the Committed value is typically more than 10 GB.

For a list of previous hotfixes, see the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

CAUSE

This problem occurs when SQL Server allocates lots of buffers from the SQL Server buffer pool. On a computer that has more than 10 GB of physical RAM, SQL Server may be able to allocate memory from the buffer pool faster than the LazyWriter process can remove aged buffers to free memory for new allocations.
