SYMPTOMS

When you connect a PowerFile C200-series device to your Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, the device does not work. When you open Device Manager, the device appears to be correctly installed on your computer.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a bus reset on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) 1394 bus. Every time that a device is connected or removed, the whole bus is reinitialized. Then, the devices are re-enumerated on the bus. Certain IEEE 1394 devices may not be correctly detected when this behavior occurs.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

WORKAROUND

To temporarily work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Expand Medium Changers.
  3. Right-click your PowerFile device, and then click Update Driver.
  4. Click Install the software automatically (Recommended), and then click Next. You receive a message that is similar to the following:

    Cannot Continue the Hardware Update Wizard
    The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.
    Choose what you want to do.
    To keep the current software, click Finish.
    To search again in another location, click Back.


  5. Click Finish.

Note This workaround resolves the problem only for the current session. The same problem will occur again after you restart the computer.

To permanently resolve this problem, install the hotfix that is described in the "Resolution" section.
