SYMPTOMS

When a Windows Terminal Services client successfully logs on to a terminal server, an event is logged in the Security log. However, this event does not include the IP address or the computer name of the Terminal Services client.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.After you apply this hotfix, the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section continues to occur. To finish resolving the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

  2. Add the following entry:
    • Entry name: LogTSSuccess
    • Value type: REG_DWORD
    • Value : 1
  3. Locate the following regisry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System\TermService

  4. Add the following value to the EventMessageFile entry:

     ;%SystemRoot%\System32\Sp3res.dll

    Note Include the semicolon (;).

When you view the event details in Event Viewer after you install the hotfix and add the LogTSSuccess registry entry, an event that is similar to the following is logged in the Security log:
Terminal Services Remote Logon Success:
User: UserName
Domain: DomainName
Error Code: 0x0 Source
Network Address: IPAddress

Note The EventMessageFile entry is automatically added when you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. The EventMessageFile entry may cause Citrix MetaFrame event logging to stop working. If this issue occurs, contact Citrix to obtain a possible workaround or resolution to this issue.
