SYMPTOMS
When you create a merge publication by using vertical filtering and the sum of the length of the published column names exceeds 4,000 characters in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, the merge publication operation fails and you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
For a list of previous hotfixes, see the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
290211 How to obtain the latest SQL Server 2000 service pack
CAUSE
This problem occurs because SQL Server 2000 truncates column names past the 4,000-character limit. The truncated column name creates a malformed SELECT statement. The malformed SELECT statement causes this problem to occur.
RESOLUTION
