SUMMARY
Microsoft distributes SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.
SUMMARY
This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
- The issues that are fixed by this hotfix package.
- The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package.
- Whether you must restart your computer after you install the hotfix package.
- Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package.
- Whether you must make any registry changes.
- The files that are contained in the hotfix package.
Introduction
Issues that are fixed by this hotfix package
The following issue is fixed in this Microsoft SQL Server 2000 hotfix package:
You experience one or more of the following symptoms on a computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2000:
- SQL Server 2000 stops responding to incoming logon requests or to query execution requests.
- You experience reduced transaction throughput.
- An error message that is similar to the following is written to the SQL Server 2000 error log:
Note To determine whether you need this hotfix, run the following query in SQL Query Analyzer:
SELECT spid FROM master.dbo.sysprocesses WHERE cmd ='LOG WRITER'
The system process ID (spid) that is returned from the query should match the spid:ecid in the error message that was mentioned earlier. Typically, the spid number for the LogWriter is 2.
For a list of previous hotfixes, see the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 post-Service Pack 3a hotfixes" section in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

CAUSE
This problem occurs when the LogWriter component of SQL Server runs continuously and does not yield to the SQL Server User Mode Scheduler (UMS) to let other threads run on the scheduler. This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:
- The database recovery model is set to Full Recovery.
- You are performing heavy transaction activity or bulk insert operations on the database, and this activity will generate lots of transaction log records.
- You experience a drop in the drive throughput. When there is a steady increase in the Write requests that are being submitted to the drive in which the Transaction log files for these specific databases are located, the drive throughput may drop instead of increasing. This could be caused by a problem with the disk drivers or with the disk controllers.
