INTRODUCTION

A hotfix update-2 package for the Volume Shadow Copy service for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is available. This update package includes all previously released VSS related fixes plus fixes for the following specific symptoms:

  • When you use the Shadow Copies of Shared Folders feature on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 cluster, your shadow copies may be lost when you move groups between nodes.

When this problem occurs, the following error message may also appear in the Application event log:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VolSnap
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5
    Description:
The shadow copy of volume volume could not be created due to insufficient non-paged memory pool for a bitmap structure

  • You may not be able to create volume shadow copies on large volumes. Smaller volumes are not affected by this issue. Events 28, 20, and 7001 that are similar to the following are logged in the System event log:

    Event Type: Error
    vent Source: VolSnap
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 28
    Description:
The shadow copy of volume Letter: could not be created due to a failure in creating the necessary on disk structures.

The above are caused by resource problems 0xC000009A STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES = Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.

Note This problem may be temporarily resolved by restarting the computer.
  • After you restart your Windows Server 2003-based computer, your Volume Shadow Copy service snapshots are lost.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a problem with non-paged pool allocation. This problem may occur if the difference (diff) area volume is not available after startup.
