MORE INFORMATION

The "Cumulative Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB887797)" corrects the following problems in Microsoft Outlook Express:

  • Symptom 1

When you use Outlook Express to send an e-mail message to a specific recipient in your address book, the e-mail message is delivered correctly. However, the subject line of the received message is empty, and the body of the message contains header information. Sometimes, the message may contain recipients that were included in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field of the message.

For example, if the e-mail message is sent by using Plain Text format, the message is received with header information that is similar to the following in the body of the message:

    >,
    Cc:"recipient name" <recipient e-mail address
    >
Bcc: "recipient name" <recipient e-mail address
    >
    Subject: original subject line
    Date: Date and Time
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: text/plain;
    format=flowed;
    charset="iso-8859-1";
    reply-type=original
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
    X-Priority: 3
    X-MSMail-Priority: Normal
    X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180
    Body of message.

Alternatively, if the message is sent by using Rich text (HTML) format, the e-mail message is received with header information that is similar to the following in the body of the message:

    >,
    Cc:"recipient name" <recipient e-mail address
    >
Bcc: "recipient name" <recipient e-mail address
    >
    Subject: original subject line

This issue can occur if the specific recipient entry in your address is corrupted. For example, the issue may occur if the address for the entry contains a line carriage character. Therefore, BCC information appears in the body of the message.

    Resolution 1

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, install cumulative update 887797. By default, the resolution to this symptom is disabled after you install this update. To enable the fix for this resolution, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
    4. Type Hotfix, and then press ENTER.
    5. Right-click Hotfix, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
    6. Type Q886192, and then press ENTER.
    7. Right-click Q886192, and then click Modify.
    8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
    9. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    10. Repeat steps 3 through 8.
    11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  • Symptom 2

Assume that you configure Outlook Express to break apart e-mail messages that are larger than a specific size. For example, you specify 60 kilobytes (KB) in the Break apart messages larger than option in the Properties dialog box for the e-mail account.

When you use Outlook Express to send an e-mail message that is larger than 60 KB, the e-mail message is sent as a multipart message. If you have also included e-mail recipients in the BCC field of the e-mail message, e-mail recipients who are listed in the To field or in the CC field of the multipart e-mail message may be able to view the e-mail recipients who are listed in the BCC field. This behavior occurs if the e-mail recipients who are listed in the To or CC fields copy the e-mail message to the desktop, and then use Notepad to open the e-mail message.

    Resolution 2

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, install cumulative update 887797. By default, the resolution to this symptom is enabled after you install this update. If you want to disable the fix for this resolution, follow these steps:

    10. Repeat steps 3 through 8.
    11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  • Symptom 3

When you receive an Outlook Express e-mail message that was sent by using a Japanese version of Microsoft Windows XP, the name that is displayed in the From field may not appear correctly.

    Resolution 3

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

    10. Repeat steps 3 through 8.
    11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  • Symptom 4

When you use the Microsoft Collaboration Data Object (CDO) to filter e-mail on a Microsoft Exchange server, a corrupted e-mail message on the server may cause an infinite loop when the CDO processes the message. This behavior may cause the CPU usage that is displayed in Task Manager to approach 100 percent. The CDO libraries use interfaces that are included in Outlook Express for data collection and for parsing.

    Resolution 4

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

    11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
  • Symptom 5

When you use a custom program, such as a backup program, that uses Simple MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) for e-mail notification, the notifications may stop after the program tries to send a Simple MAPI command. This problem occurs because Simple MAPI has stopped responding. The program may still function correctly, but it cannot send e-mail notifications.

Note By default, the Simple MAPI service provider in Microsoft Windows 2000, in Microsoft Windows XP, and in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is Outlook Express.

For more information about Simple MAPI, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

If you install Windows XP SP2, and then you open a *.mht file from a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003-based Web site, the text or the images that are associated with the file do not display. A red "X" appears instead of the images. This problem may occur if large .mht files are stored on a SharePoint Portal Server computer.

    Resolution 7

  • Symptom 8

When you import a .csv file to your address book, your address book may import the file even if the e-mail address entry is not valid. When you send e-mail that includes this address book entry, some headers in the e-mail message may be converted to message body text.
