SYMPTOMS

A Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) query may stop responding when the following conditions are both true:

  1. WMI performs a query of a performance counter object, such as the Processor object.
  2. The WMI query is run by a user who is not a member of the Performance Monitor Users group or the Performance Log Users group.


RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, identify the user account that the WMI query will use and add that account to either of the following groups:

  • Performance Monitor Users
  • Performance Log Users
