SUMMARY

This article describes what you have to do before you remove your Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computers from a site and after you migrate to Exchange 2000 Server or to Exchange Server 2003. You have to perform a routing change for outgoing and incoming Internet e-mail before you remove your Exchange Server 5.5 computers.
To do this, you have to do the following tasks:


  • Remove address spaces from the Internet Mail Service on the Exchange Server 5.5 computers.
  • Restart the Internet Mail Service as needed.
  • Force directory replication as needed.
  • Verify that outgoing e-mail queues have cleared.
  • Install an SMTP connector on the Exchange 2000 Server computer or on the Exchange Server 2003 computer.
  • Force Active Directory Connector (ADC) replication as needed.
  • Verify that the SMTP connector is seen in your Exchange Server 5.5 configuration.
  • Recalculate routing on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer.
  • Remove the Internet Mail Service connector.

INTRODUCTION

This step-by-step article describes how to change the routing of outgoing Internet e-mail from your Exchange 5.5 Internet Mail Service Connector to an SMTP connector on Exchange 2000 Server or on Exchange Server 2003. You must follow these steps before you remove your Exchange Server 5.5 computers and after you migrate to Exchange 2000 Server or to Exchange Server 2003.

If you have a single Exchange Server 5.5 computer in your site, perform the steps in the "Single or last Exchange Server 5.5 computer" section. If you have multiple Exchange Server 5.5 computers in your site, follow the steps in the "Multiple Exchange Server 5.5 computers" section, and then follow the steps in the "Single or last Exchange Server 5.5 computer" section.

Multiple Exchange Server 5.5 computers

On all but one of the multiple Exchange Server 5.5 computers, follow these steps.

1. Remove address spaces from the Internet Mail Service

  1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, expand the Configuration container, and then click the Connections container.
  3. In the Details pane on the right, click Internet Mail Service (Your_Server_Name).
  4. On the File menu, click Properties, and then click the Address Space tab.
  5. Click each entry in the Address list, and then click Remove.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Quit the Administrator program.

2. Restart the Internet Mail Service

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Right-click Internet Mail Service, and then click Restart.
  3. Quit the Services snap-in.

3. Force directory replication

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, expand the Setting container, and then expand the Server container.
  3. Click the Your_5.5_Server container.
  4. In the Details pane on the right, click Directory Services, and then click Properties on the File menu.
  5. On the General tab, click Update Now.
  6. Quit the Administrator program.
  7. Allow time for replication.

4. Delete the Internet Mail Service connector

Verify that outgoing Internet e-mail queues for the Internet Mail Service connector have cleared, and then delete the Internet Mail Service connector. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, and then expand the Configuration container.
  3. Click Connections.
  4. In the right pane, right-click Internet Mail Service (Your_Server_Name). On the File menu, click Properties.
  5. Click the Queues tab.
  6. Click Refresh.

    After the outgoing Internet e-mail queues are empty, you must delete the Internet Mail Service connector.
  7. Click Internet Mail Service (Your_Server_Name).
  8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

5. Force directory replication

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, expand the Setting container, and then expand the Server container.
  3. Click the Your_5.5_Server container.
  4. In the Details pane on the right, click Directory Services, and then click Properties on the File menu.
  5. On the General tab, click Update Now.
  6. Quit the Administrator program.
  7. Allow time for replication.

Single or last Exchange Server 5.5 computer

1. Install an SMTP connector on your Exchange Server computer

To install an SMTP connector on your Exchange 2000 Server computer or on your Exchange Server 2003 computer, follow these steps:

  1. Start Exchange System Manager, and then expand the Administrative Groups container.
  2. Expand the administrative group that you want to work with.
  3. Expand the Routing Groups container, and then expand the routing group that you want to work with.

    Note If you do not see the Routing Groups container, follow the steps that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  4. Right-click the Connectors container, and then click New.
  5. Click SMTP Connector.
  6. On the General tab, provide an appropriate identifying name for the connector. Choose to use DNS or to forward to a smart host. Forward to a smart host if you are relaying through an Internet service provider (ISP).
  7. Under Local Bridgeheads, click Add. Add the server that becomes the bridgehead server for the routing group. Designate an SMTP virtual server as a bridgehead server for the SMTP connector.
  8. Click the Address Space tab.
  9. Under Connector Scope, click either Entire Organization or Routing Group.
  10. Click Add, click SMTP, and then click OK. Accept the default setting unless you require outgoing e-mail domain restriction. Leave the cost as 1. Then, click OK.
  11. If you have chosen to forward all e-mail to a smart host, click the Advanced tab. Click Outbound Security, and then select an appropriate authentication method for your relay host. The default is Anonymous Access.
  12. Click OK three times.
  13. Quit Exchange System Manager.
  14. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service and the SMTP service for these changes to take effect. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Right-click Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine, and then click Restart.
    3. Right-click Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and then click Restart.
    4. Quit the Services snap-in.

2. Speed up replication of the new SMTP connector to the Exchange Server 5.5 computer

  1. To force Active Directory Connector (ADC) replication on the Config CA connection agreement, follow these steps:
    1. On the server where you installed the ADC, click Start, point to Programs, Microsoft Exchange, and then click Active Directory Connector.
    2. In the left pane, click Active Directory Connector (Your_Server_Name).
    3. In the right pane, right-click Config CA, and then click Replicate Now.
  2. To force directory replication, follow these steps:
    1. Start the Administrator program.
    2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, expand the Setting container, and then expand the Server container.
    3. Click the Your_5.5_Server container.
    4. In the Details pane on the right, click Directory Services, and then click Properties on the File menu.
    5. On the General tab, click Update Now.
    6. Quit the Administrator program.
    7. Allow time for replication.

3. Verify that the SMTP connector is seen in your Exchange Server 5.5 configuration

After a short interval, verify that the SMTP connector is seen in your Exchange Server 5.5 configuration.

  1. On your Exchange Server 5.5 computer, start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, and then click Configuration.
  3. Click Connections.
  4. In the right pane, verify that the SMTP connector that you created in Exchange 2000 Server or in Exchange Server 2003 is present.

4. Remove the address space on the last or only Exchange Server 5.5 computer

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, expand the Configuration container, and then click the Connections container.
  3. In the Details pane on the right, click Internet Mail Service (Your_Server_Name).
  4. On the File menu, click Properties, and then click the Address Space tab.
  5. Click each entry in the Address list, and then click Remove.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Quit the Administrator program.

5. Restart the Internet Mail Service

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Right-click Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service, and then click Restart.
  3. Quit the Services snap-in.

6. Recalculate routing on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container.
  3. Click Configuration.
  4. In the right pane, click Site Addressing, and then click Properties on the File menu.
  5. Click the Routing tab.
  6. Click Recalculate Routing, and then click OK.
  7. Quit the Administrator program.

7. Force ADC replication on the Config CA connection agreement

  1. To force Active Directory Connector (ADC) replication on the Config CA connection agreement, follow these steps:
    1. On the server where you installed the ADC, click Start, point to Programs, Microsoft Exchange, and then click Active Directory Connector.
    2. In the left pane, click Active Directory Connector (Your_Server_Name).
    3. In the right pane, right-click Config CA, and then click Replicate Now.
  2. To force directory replication, follow these steps:
    1. Start the Administrator program.
    2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, expand the Setting container, and then expand the Server container.
    3. Click the Your_5.5_Server container.
    4. In the Details pane on the right, click Directory Services, and then click Properties on the File menu.
    5. On the General tab, click Update Now.
    6. Quit the Administrator program.
    7. Allow time for replication.

8. Verify that outgoing Internet e-mail queues for the Internet Mail Service connector have cleared

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, and then expand the Configuration container.
  3. Click Connections.
  4. In the right pane, right-click Internet Mail Service (Your_Server_Name), and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Queues tab.
  6. Click Refresh.

9. Verify that outgoing e-mail is going through the SMTP connector

  1. Stop the Internet Mail Service on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer.
  2. Send e-mail from a mailbox on your Exchange 2000 Server computer to an Internet e-mail address.
  3. Verify that the e-mail reaches the recipient.

10. Remove the last Internet Mail Service connector

After you have changed routing of your incoming Internet e-mail from the IP address of your Exchange Server 5.5 computer to the IP address of your Exchange 2000 Server or of your Exchange Server 2003 computer, you can remove the last or only Internet Mail Service connector.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Administrator program.
  2. Expand the Your_Site_Name container, and then expand the Configuration container.
  3. Click Connections.
  4. In the right pane, click Internet Mail Service (Your_Server_Name).
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

You can now remove the SMTP connector on the server. This connector is not required for outgoing e-mail from the Exchange Server computers. However, if you have multiple Exchange Server computers in your site or in your routing group, you can keep the SMTP connector and use this server with the SMTP connector as the bridgehead server for outgoing e-mail.
