"Logical Disk Manager" error messages when you use Disk Management to format a new hard-disk partition in Windows Server 2003

Article ID: 883100

Article Last Modified on 8/3/2004

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the New Partition Wizard in Disk Management to create a new hard-disk partition on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, and then you perform one or both of the following actions, you may receive an error message:

  • You try to format the new hard-disk partition.
  • You try to assign a drive letter to the new hard-disk partition.

In this scenario, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:

Logical Disk Manager: The path cannot be used for creating a drive path likely because the folder does not exist or is already a drive path to some other volume.

Logical Disk Manager: The format did not complete successfully.

CAUSE

Remote Storage temporarily opens an exclusive handle to the hard-disk partition immediately after it receives notification that a new hard-disk partition has been created. However, Disk Management tries to either format the new hard-disk partition or assign the drive letter at the same time that Remote Storage opens a handle to the new partition. Because of this timing problem, Disk Management cannot successfully open a handle to the new partition.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods after you receive one or both of the error message that are described in the "Symptoms" section:

  • Try again to assign the drive letter to the new partition.
  • Try again to format the new partition.

Or, perform both of these methods again, as needed.

Note If you must perform these methods repeatedly, it may be useful to stop Remote Storage. To stop Remote Storage, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the right pane, right-click Remote Storage Server, and then click Stop.
  3. Close the Services dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
