BUG #: 471449 (SQL Server 8.0)
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.
SUMMARY
This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
- The issues that are fixed by this hotfix package
- The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package
- Whether you must restart the computer after you install the hotfix package
- Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
- Whether you must make any registry changes
- The files that are contained in the hotfix package
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, when you run an UPDATE query and a SELECT query at the same time, the UPDATE query blocks the SELECT query. You experience this problem when you run a SELECT statement that uses the TOP clause and the READPAST locking hint.
Note The SELECT statement successfully runs without being blocked when you remove the TOP clause.

CAUSE
This problem may occur when there is a clustered index on a table. When there is a clustered index on a table, the READPAST locking hint may not read past the obtained locks. The row that is locked is a key within an index.

Note Because of file dependencies, the most recent hotfix or feature that contains these files may also contain additional files.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
- Remove the TOP clause from the SELECT query.
- Use the HASH JOIN hint in the SELECT query.
Note You may experience a decrease in performance when you use the HASH JOIN hint.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.
