SYMPTOMS

When you run a 32-bit program that uses the Virtual Disk service (VDS) API on your computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems, the program may not work correctly. For example, when you try to run the 32-bit version of the Diskpart.exe tool, Diskpart.exe stops responding. You receive the following error message:

The disk management services could not complete the operation.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the 32-bit VDS dynamic link library (DLL) component is not installed or registered on the 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
