SUMMARY
This article describes the functional enhancements, download information, and installation information for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Service Pack 1 (SP1). This article includes the following information:

INTRODUCTION
Reporting Services SP1 is an update that you can apply to an existing installation of Reporting Services on your computer. To install Reporting Services SP1, double-click the self-extracting executable file. You can also install Reporting Services SP1 by extracting the files, and then running the Reporting Services SP1 Setup program at a command prompt. Reporting Services SP1 only upgrades the components that are currently installed. If you install additional Reporting Services components, you must rerun the Setup program to update the corresponding components. The Setup program performs the following tasks:
- Upgrades the following editions of Reporting Services:
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Developer Edition
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Standard Edition
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Evaluation Edition
- Upgrades all Reporting Services installation configurations, including client-only configurations, server-only configurations, and client-server configurations.
- Upgrades the final product release of SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services (8.00.0743.00).
Note The Setup program does not upgrade SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Beta 2.
Reporting Services SP1 is independent of the SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4). However, if you install Reporting Services SP1 after you install SQL Server 2000 SP4, we recommend that you use install the service packs in the following order:
- SQL Server 2000 SP4
- Reporting Services SP1
Incompatibility problems may occur when you install Reporting Services SP1 on early beta versions of Microsoft Windows XP SP2. However, the Incompatibility problems were resolved in the later beta versions of Windows XP SP2. Therefore, if you installed Reporting Services on a computer that is running Windows XP SP2, we recommend that you apply the release version of the Windows XP SP2 on your computer before you install Reporting Services SP1.
The release of Reporting Services SP1 includes some functional enhancements, fixes for the bugs in the final release of Reporting Services, and performance enhancements. The following functional enhancements are included in Reporting Services SP1:
- An improved Microsoft Excel rendering extension: By using the new Excel rendering extension, you can render reports that can be viewed and modified in earlier versions of Excel. For example, you can render a report that can be viewed and modified in Excel 2000.
- A robust PDF rendering extension: The performance of the PDF rendering extension is improved in Reporting Services SP1.
- An improved ability to change the display styles of the Chart control in Report Designer.
- Support for references to external URLs for images and resources in reports.
- Support for data caching behavior to preview reports.
- Support for the new line character in expressions.
- A facility to modify the style of the HTML Viewer toolbar by using a style sheet.
- New parameters for URL access that offer more options to customize the report presentation at run time.
- Report Manager proxy persists authentication cookies so that the authentication cookies can be used by the custom security extensions.
- Support for hidden report parameters
- Support for compressing the temporary snapshots and storing the snapshots on the file system.
- Support for disabling the integrated security support for accessing report data sources.
Identify your version of Reporting Services
To identify the version of Reporting Services that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:
- Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
- In the Address bar, type the URL of the report server, and then click GO.
For example, if the name of your computer is TestServer, type http://TestServer/reportserver in the Address bar.
Note The version information for Reporting Services is listed at the bottom of the page. The version number of the final release of Reporting Services is 8.00.0743.00.
Update Reporting Services Books Online
The Setup program does not update the version of Reporting Services Books Online that is installed with the final release of Reporting Services. To download an updated version of Reporting Services Books Online, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Download the Reporting Services SP1 setup files
The Setup program is distributed as a self-extracting file that you can download from a Microsoft Web site. For additional information about the download location, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Install SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services SP1
To install Reporting Services SP1, follow the instructions in this section. You must install the final release of Reporting Services on your computer before you install Reporting Services SP1. The installation of Reporting Services SP1 will fail if components of the earlier version of Reporting Services are not installed on your computer. You do not have to stop or pause the Reporting Services Windows service or the Reporting Services Web service before you install Reporting Services SP1. Additionally, Reporting Services SP1 does not support remote installation.
The Setup program is available in the same languages as SQL Server 2000. Therefore, the Setup program determines the language that was used on your computer when you installed the final release of Reporting Services. The Setup user interface and the error messages are displayed in that language.
Reporting Services SP1 modifies the following files and components that are installed with the final release of Reporting Services:
- Report Services databases.
- Program files, including Report Server, Report Designer, Report Manager, and the command-line utilities.
- File version information for all the program files. The format of the file version for all the program files will be changed to 8.00.085
n.nn.
Reporting Services SP1 does not modify the following items in Reporting Services:
- Configuration files. The Setup program reads the configuration files, but the Setup program does not modify, add, or remove the settings that are specified in the configuration files.
- Virtual directories and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) settings.
- File permissions for the configuration files, the program files, or the installation folders.
Note The folders that contain program files are the installation folders. By default, the installation folders are located in the Installation drive\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance of SQL Server\Reporting Services folder.
- Event log entries and performance counters.
- Reporting Services Books Online.
- Licensing information.
- AdventureWorks sample database.
- Samples, reports, snapshots, and other user data.
Back up the Reporting Services databases
Before you install Reporting Services SP1, you must back up the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database that are installed on your instance of SQL Server. By default, ReportServer is the Reporting Services database and ReportServerTempDb is the Reporting Services temporary database.
The Reporting Services SP1 installation modifies the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database. Therefore, the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database are incompatible with earlier versions of these databases. If you have to reinstall the final release of Reporting Services without Reporting Services SP1, you must back up the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database.
You must also back up a copy of the encryption keys that were created when you installed Reporting Services. For more information about encryption keys, visit the following MSDN Web site:
Install Reporting Services SP1
To install Reporting Services SP1 on your computer, you must run the Setup program from one of the following locations:
- A folder on your computer that contains the extracted service pack files from the Reporting Services SP1 self-extracting setup file (SP1Setup.exe).
- A folder on a network share that contains the extracted service pack files from the Reporting Services SP1 self-extracting setup file (SP1Setup.exe). To install the Reporting Services server components from a network share, use one of the following methods:
- Map the network share that contains the extracted service pack files to an available drive letter on your computer, locate the folder on the mapped drive that contains SP1Setup.exe, and then run SP1Setup.exe.
- Start the installation of Reporting Services SP1 by running the SP1Setup.exe file on the network share that contains the extracted service pack files. The SP1Setup.exe file is located in the
Network share\Path of the folder that contains the extracted service pack files\X86\Setup folder on the network share.
You are prompted to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA), and then you are prompted to install Reporting Services SP1.
Account credentials
The Setup program uses your Windows logon account credentials (Windows integrated security) to upgrade the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database. To perform the upgrade, the Windows user account that you use to log on to your computer must be a member of the db_owner fixed database role for the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database.
Note If you want to use different credentials, you must run the Setup program at a command prompt.
Log files
You can view the log files that are created when Reporting Services SP1 is installed. You can use these log files to troubleshoot installation problems or to verify the Reporting Services SP1 installation. The Setup program writes the status message, errors, and warnings to the following log files (where N is the file's version number):
- Rssp1stp
N.log: The Rssp1stpN.log file contains information about the system and the status of the prerequisite check. - Rssp1MSP
N.log: The Rssp1MSPN.log file collects the messages, errors, and warnings that are generated during the upgrade process.
To locate the log files, click Start, click Run, type %temp%, and then click OK. You can locate the log files in the Temp folder.
Verify the upgraded instance of Reporting Services and back up the Reporting Services databases
After you install Reporting Services SP1, follow these steps.
Note If the Setup program prompts you to restart your computer, you must restart your computer before you complete these steps.
- Make sure that the Reporting Services Windows service is running.
- To make sure that Reporting Services SP1 is working correctly, view the existing reports in Report Manager.
- Back up the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database.
Note You do not have to create a new back up of the encryption keys or adjust any settings. Reporting Services SP1 does not modify the connection information or invalidate the encryption capability of the previous version of your report server.

Install Reporting Services SP1 on a Report Server Web farm
If you deployed Reporting Services on a Web farm, you must run the Setup program on each computer that hosts a Reporting Services component. Therefore, you must run the Setup program on each report server node in the cluster and on the computer that hosts the shared Reporting Services database.
Before you install Reporting Services SP1 on a Report Server Web farm, you must take the report server nodes in the Web farm offline until all the report server nodes and the Reporting Services database are upgraded. To do this, follow these steps:
- Stop IIS on each computer.
- Stop the Reporting Services Windows service on each computer.
The order of installation for Reporting Services SP1 on the report servers is important. Install Reporting Services SP1 in the following order:
- Run the Setup program on the computer that hosts the Reporting Services database.
The database format for the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database are updated to make them compatible with Reporting Services SP1.
- Run the Setup program on the other report server nodes in any order.
After you apply Reporting Services SP1 on the first report server node, you will not be able to use the upgraded database format on the other report server nodes until all report server nodes are upgraded to Reporting Services SP1.
After you upgrade a report server cluster to Reporting Services SP1, you cannot use the Setup program to automatically point a new report server instance or a report server node to the existing Reporting Services database.
To create a new report server node in the report server cluster on the node, follow these steps:
- Run the Reporting Services Setup program to install a new report server instance.
- Run the Reporting Services SP1 Setup program to upgrade the report server instance.
- Run the Rsconfig utility on the report server instance to configure the connection to the Reporting Services database that you want to use. You must configure the connection to the upgraded Reporting Services database that is compatible with Reporting Services SP1.
- Run the Rsactivate utility to initialize the report server instance in the report server cluster.
Install Reporting Services SP1 by using command-line parameters
To perform a silent installation or to specify a non-default account to upgrade the Reporting Services database, you can run the Setup program at a command prompt. By default, the Setup program uses the Windows user account that you used to log on to your computer. You can use the following command-line parameters to start the installation of Reporting Services SP1 at a command prompt:
- The /x command-line parameter extracts all files but does not run the Setup program.
- The /x:
pathcommand-line parameter extracts all files to the location that is specified in the parameter but does not run the Setup program. - The /q command-line parameter runs the Setup program in silent mode and suppresses the user interface.
- The RSSETUPACCOUNT command-line parameter specifies a SQL Server account that has permissions to create new logins, to create roles, to create databases, and to assign permissions to users.
- The RSSETUPPASSWORD command-line parameter specifies the password for the SQL Server account.
You can use the following syntax to specify the command-line parameters:
SP1Setup.exe /q RSSETUPACCOUNT=DomainName\UserName RSSETUPPASSWORD=Password
Redistribute Reporting Services SP1
Independent software vendors (ISVs) may redistribute this service pack to upgrade Reporting Services components that have been integrated in non-Microsoft products.

Remove Reporting Services SP1
To remove Reporting Services SP1, you must first remove Reporting Services from your computer, and then reinstall Reporting Services without upgrading the report server instance to Reporting Services SP1. If you applied a hotfix to your report server instance, you must reapply the hotfix to the report server instance.
The Reporting Services databases that are compatible with Reporting Services SP1 are not removed when you remove Reporting Services from your computer. You must manually remove the upgraded Reporting Services databases, and then restore the Reporting Services databases that you backed up before you installed Reporting Services SP1.
To remove Reporting Services from your computer, use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Note There is no separate program that you can use to remove Reporting Services SP1.

Rebuild a Reporting Services installation
To rebuild a Reporting Services installation that you upgraded to Reporting Services SP1, follow these steps:
- Install the SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services components on your computer.
- Install SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services SP1 on your computer.
- Delete the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database.
- Restore the Reporting Services database and the Reporting Services temporary database that are compatible with Reporting Services SP1.
- Run the Rsconfig utility on the report server to configure a connection to the Reporting Services database that is compatible with Reporting Services SP1.
- If the computer name or the service account has changed, run the Rskeymgmt utility to apply the keys that were backed up.
