SYMPTOMS

When you try to use an API over the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) service to send an extended operation to an LDAP server, the request does not complete correctly and you receive a protocol error.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because if optional data is not included in the API call, the data item is sent, but it indicates that the length is 0 (zero). Many operations require that data is not sent with the API call.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service pack, Microsoft Windows 2000 service pack, and Microsoft Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4, the original release version of Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1, or the original release version of Windows Server 2003
