SYMPTOMS
When you use the Graphics Manager (on the Tools menu) or the Pack and Go Wizard (on the File menu, point to Pack and Go) in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 to save embedded pictures as linked graphics, the shapes of some picture frames may change unexpectedly and revert to their original shape or size.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the pictures have been stretched or resized non-proportionally.
RESOLUTION
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
- Open your publication in Publisher 2003.
- On the Tools menu, click Design Checker.
- On the Design Checker task pane, if an item is listed as "not scaled proportionally" in the Select an item to fix list, move your mouse pointer over the item, click the down-arrow that appears, and then click Go to this Item.
Note If there are no items in the Select an item to fix list on the Design Checker task pane that are listed as "not scaled proportionally", the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section will not occur. - Right-click the selected picture, and then click Save as Picture.
- In the Save As dialog box, follow these steps:
- In the Save as type box, click the appropriate picture format type.
See the following examples for the appropriate picture format type:- If the picture is a raster-based graphic (from a scanner, digital camera, or paint program), click Tag Image File Format (*.tif).
- If the picture is a vector-based graphic (commercial clip art or a graphic from an illustration program), click Windows Metafile (*.wmf).
- In the File name box, type a name for your picture.
- Click Change (next to Resolution).
- In the Change Resolution dialog box, click the appropriate resolution for your picture, and then click OK.
- Click Save to save your picture.
- In the Save as type box, click the appropriate picture format type.
- Right-click the selected picture in your publication, point to Change Picture, and then click From File.
- Select the picture that you saved in step 5, click the down-arrow on the Insert button, and then click Link to File.
- Repeat steps 3 through 7 for each item that is listed as "not scaled proportionally" in the Select an item to fix list on the Design Checker task pane.
- Click Close (the X in the upper-right corner) to close the Design Checker task pane.
- On the File menu, click Save to save the changes to your publication.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
