Message Queuing icon does not appear in Control Panel in Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Message Queuing in dependent-client mode on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000, you may not see the Message Queuing icon in Control Panel after an installation.

CAUSE

During the installation of Message Queuing, if you provide a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) for the supporting server, the Message Queuing Control Panel item cannot read this FQDN from the following registry value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters\RemoteQMMachine

Therefore, the Message Queuing icon does not appear in any user interface in Control Panel.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To resolve the problem, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Run.

The Run dialog box appears.

In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

The Registry Editor window appears.

Locate the following subkey. Click the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters

In the right pane of Registry Editor, right-click RemoteQMMachine, and then click Modify.

The Edit String dialog box appears.

Set the RemoteQMMachine entry value to <ComputerName>.

Note The <ComputerName>placeholder is a placeholder for the computer name without the domain name of your domain controller. For example, if your computer name is <ComputerName>.microsoft.com, use only the computer name <ComputerName>.

Quit Registry Editor.

Steps to reproduce the problem

To reproduce the problem, follow these steps:

Add a computer to a domain. To do this, follow these steps:
1. On a computer that is running Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
  
  The Network Dial-up Connections window appears.
2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  
  The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears.
3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  
  The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box appears.
4. In the Preferred DNS server box, type the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that is a domain controller for your computer, and then click OK.
5. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
6. Close the Network and Dial-up Connections window.
7. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  
  The System Properties dialog box appears.
8. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
  
  The Computer Name Changes dialog box appears.
9. Click Domain, and then type the domain name of the domain controller computer.
  
  For example, you may type microsoft.com.
10. Click OK.
  
  The Domain Username And Password dialog box appears.
11. In the Name box, type the user name of the domain controller computer. In the Password box, type the password of the domain controller computer, and then click OK.
12. Restart your computer.
To install Message Queuing on your computer, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  
  The Control Panel window appears.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  
  The Add/Remove Programs dialog box appears.
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components, and then click Components.
  
  The Windows Components Wizard dialog box appears.
4. In the Components list, click Message Queuing Services, and then click Next.
  
  The Terminal Services Setup page appears.
5. Click Remote administration mode, and then click Next.
  
  The Message Queuing Type page appears.
6. Click Dependent client, and then click Next.
  
  The Message Queuing Server dialog box appears.
7. In the Specify a Message Queuing server box, type the FQDN of the domain controller, and then click Next.
  
  The Configuring Components page appears.
  
  During configuration, the Insert Disk dialog box appears and prompts you to insert the Windows 2000 CD.
8. Insert the Windows 2000 CD in your CD drive, and then click OK.
  
  When the installation is complete, the Completing the Windows Components Wizard page appears.
9. Click Finish to close the Windows Component Wizard dialog box.
10. Click Close to close the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.
11. Open Control Panel. Try to find the Message Queuing icon.
  
  You may notice the problem that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
