SYMPTOMS

After you create a new DNS zone in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the new zone may not load after you restart the DNS service. The following event may appear in the event log:

Event Category: None
Event ID: 1004
Date: 15.03.2004
Time: 17:10:19
User: N/A

Description:
The DNS server could not find or open zone file dns\m\303\266ller.de.dns. in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dns directory. Verify that the zone file is located in this directory and that it contains valid data.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the zone contains special non-ASCII characters. For example, the problem occurs if the zone contains the "ä", "ö", or "ü" characters.
